Heading west and arriving at the Snaefellsnes peninsula
Day six was another day spent on the road, travelling around the west side of Iceland as we made our way back south. As is often the case in Iceland, the journey itself was part of the experience, with spectacular scenery and small stops that made the journey special.
One of the highlights was the Kolugljúfur canyon, a stunning place with waterfalls that look like something out of a fairy tale. The force of the water and the depth of the canyon leave you speechless. We also visited Grabrok, a system of three volcanic craters. We climbed up to enjoy the views from above; the effort was worth it.
Our destination for the day was the Snaefellsnes peninsula, where we began exploring some of its most famous corners. We visited the famous black church of Budir, a small, completely black wooden church that stands out for its simplicity and contrast with the landscape.
Next, we went to Ytri Tunga beach, known to be one of the best places in Iceland to see seals. And yes, we were lucky: we were able to see them resting near the shore.
In the evening, we arrived in Grundarfjordur, where we stayed. We had dinner at the Harbour Café, a cozy place with good food. We decided to be brave and try the famous fermented shark (Hákarl). Its flavor is extremely intense and peculiar, and although it was interesting to try it, it did not become our favorite dish. Luckily, the rest of the dinner made up for the experience.
With accumulated fatigue and satisfied with everything we had seen, we went to the hotel to rest, ready to continue exploring this wonderful peninsula the next day.
