Day 9: Volcanic hike, relaxation at the Blue Lagoon and frozen farewell
The last day of our Icelandic adventure began with a hike to the Litli Hrutur volcano, located near the erupting volcano and part of the same volcanic system.
On the way to the volcano, the guide made a couple of stops to enjoy the scenery. One was at one of Iceland’s many black sand beaches. The other was at a geothermal area, similar to Hverir, although much smaller.
The hike up the volcano was a long route, about two hours, that promised incredible views. However, the weather was not in our favor: the dense fog covered everything and we could barely see the landscape, much less the active volcano. A pity, but even so, walking in that volcanic area had its charm.
After the hike, the excursion took us to the famous Blue Lagoon, Iceland’s most popular spa. Its blue waters are really pretty, and the overall experience was pleasant. Of course, it is obviously a very touristy place and it was quite crowded. It is easy to understand why it is so famous, but after the tranquility of Hvammsvik the day before, the contrast was noticeable. It is important to book your entrance to the Blue Lagoon in advance, as the capacity is limited and it fills up quite quickly.
In the evening, for our last dinner in Iceland, we chose the Fjallkonan restaurant. We ordered Arctic Char and Lamb & Flatbread, both dishes delicious. For dessert, they surprised us with some original deep-fried brownies. What we liked most about the place was that it seemed more frequented by locals than by tourists, which gave a more authentic touch to our gastronomic farewell.
Finally, we closed the day (and the trip) with a drink at the Magic Ice Bar, a pub where everything, from the walls to the tables, is made of ice. The experience was fun and a curious way to close our adventure, almost as if Iceland wanted to remind us until the last moment of its unique connection with ice and cold.
Day 10: Quiet farewell
The last day in Iceland began with a quiet morning stroll around Reykjavik. We took the opportunity to take a last stroll through its streets and make a strategic stop at Braud & Co, a very popular bakery. We bought some typical breads, which were the perfect way to take a little piece of Iceland with us.
Our return flight was at 15:20, so around noon we headed to Keflavik Airport, which is about 45 minutes from the city. We wanted to make sure we had enough time to check in smoothly and not be in a rush.
And so our adventure in Iceland ended. Ten days full of breathtaking landscapes, unique experiences and unforgettable memories. Although it was hard for us to say goodbye, we left with the feeling of having made the most of every moment in this magical land.
Iceland is definitely a place we hope to return to one day!
