Day 7: Reykjavik and Northern Lights

The last day of our road trip adventure took us to Reykjavik, where we arrived around 12 noon and returned the rental car. With that, the last part of the trip officially began, during which we would visit the city and take several excursions from here.

The first thing we did, since it was close to the rental car place, was to attend the Lava Show Experience. It was interesting to see real lava flowing and cooling while they explained the process. It’s something you rarely get to witness up close, and it was a good overview of Iceland’s volcanic nature.

Afterwards, we headed to one of the most famous hot dog stands in Reykjavik, Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur, to try this Icelandic classic. Delicious and quick, it was perfect for further exploring the city, although we still prefer Pylsuvagninn in Selfoss.

Reykjavik is small and easy to get around on foot, but it has its charm. We visited the Hallgrímskirkja cathedral, which really impresses with its modern and minimalist design. From the top of its tower, the views of the city are great.

We also walked to the Sun Voyager, a monument that symbolises a Viking ship and looks beautiful by the sea. Nearby is the Harpa, a modern auditorium with impressive architecture.

Finally, we strolled down the main street, Skólavörðustígur, with its shops, cafés and the relaxed atmosphere that characterizes the city.

We decided to have an early dinner at Café Loki, a restaurant near the cathedral that left us enchanted. The very traditional dishes were an excellent way to end the day in the city.

In the evening, the most anticipated moment arrived: a trip to see the Northern Lights.

After our experience with the whales, we were a bit nervous, but this time luck was on our side. We managed to see them on the first try. The Northern Lights were simply magical, dancing in the sky with green and purple hues.

With those images engraved in our memory, we returned to the hotel, grateful for having closed the day with one of the greatest natural wonders of the world.
